Regions of
Ecuador

The Country is naturally divided by the sea, rivers and specially by the Andes Mountain Range in four regions;

Together they form a unique and varied landscape where everything is amazingly close. Due to its small area, in Ecuador everything is within a day's travel from Quito (capital city). Here you can be in one hour at the rainforest, the next by snow covered peaks, and then on a sandy beach.

People is as varied as it regions, you will see Native Indians, Afro-Ecuadorians, Mestizos and White-Skinned people, not to mention Asian, European and American immigrants.

Spanish is the official language, also native tongues are still spoken by certain ethnic groups and, until these days, a number of ethnic traditions are part of everyday life.

Cultural richness is characteristic, specially at the highlands where numerous colonial buildings and works of art can be appreciated. Also at the coastal and amazon region pre-hispanic pieces.

Ecuador is as rich in natural diversity as can be. This country has about 1600 bird species (one sixth of all bird species on Earth), about 4500 orchid species (one third of the number of South America's total number), 10% of all earth's plant species and so on. Besides it holds what is considered as one of the Wonders of the Natural World, the Galapagos Islands.
